Cal Ripken Sr. League Mourns Aces Founder Don Dinan

 

The Cal Ripken Sr. League mourns Alexandria Aces founder Don Dinan, who passed away on January 29. We thank Don for his dedication to the Aces, our league, and the Alexandria community.

2024 Internship Application is Open!

The Cal Ripken Sr. Collegiate Baseball League is now seeking media interns for the 2024 summer season. Interns will work collaboratively on a team of 3-5 other interns to create content for our league website and social media channels, among other tasks. This is a great opportunity for college and graduate students who are pursuing a career in sports media and communications.

Senators Name Helen Bailey as Assistant GM

The Southern Maryland Senators have named Helen Bailey as their new Assistant General Manager, effective immediately. Bailey is the first female front office staff in the Ripken Sr. League since Sara Berset served as General Manager of the Alexandria Aces from 2018-19.

Bailey served as an intern for the Senators in their inaugural season this summer before joining their front office this fall. A native of Southern Maryland, she played softball and volleyball, ran indoor track, and managed the basketball team at Chopticon High School in St. Mary's County. Currently, she is pursuing a B.S. in Environmental and Natural Resources with a concentration in economic policy at Clemson University. Additionally, she serves as the president and center fielder of the Clemson club softball team.

Big Train Win Tenth League Championship

The Bethesda Big Train defeated the Alexandria Aces 7-3 Thursday night, completing the two game LCS sweep to win their tenth Cal Ripken Sr. League championship and their second in three years.

Catcher Jason Schiavone (James Madison) earned LCS Most Outstanding Player honors after going 4-for-7 with three homers, eight RBIs, and five runs scored across the two-game series.

Hammond Steps In, Leads Aces to Victory on Historic Night

With Manager Chris Berset away for the evening, Assistant Coach Jen Hammond took the helm for the Aces, leading them to a 14-6 victory over Gaithersburg. In doing so, she became the first woman to manage a Ripken Sr. League game.

League Inducts Four New Members into Cal Ripken Sr. Hall of Fame

Matt Bowman, James Outman, John Carey, and Edward Sharp were inducted into the Cal Ripken Sr. League Hall of Fame on Wednesday, June 7. Read more here.

2023 Most Outstanding Hitter: Matt Ossenfort

Aces first baseman Matt Ossenfort (Vanderbilt) is the 2023 Cal Ripken Sr. League Most Outstanding Hitter. Ossenfort dominated the league all-summer long, leading the league in homers (8), OPS (1.173), and slugging (.693) while finishing second in average (.376) and RBIs (35). He tallied multiple hits in 15 of his 28 games played, finished within a stone's throw of the league triple crown. He homered three games in a row from June 29-July 3, and went deep three times in three days from July 16-18.

2023 Most Outstanding Pitcher: Brandon Cassedy

Big Train right-hander Brandon Cassedy (Christopher Newport) is the 2023 Cal Ripken Sr. League Most Outstanding Pitcher. Cassedy led the league with a 0.64 ERA in 28 innings of work in the regular season. He compiled a 3-0 record with 32 strikeouts and a paltry 0.86 WHIP. He didn't allow an earned run in the month of June, and finished the season with just two earned runs allowed across six starts.

His finest outing came on June 29 against the D.C. Grays, when he threw five shutout innings, allow just two hits while striking out a season-high nine batters. Congratulations to Brandon on winning the Most Outstanding Pitcher Award!

LCS Most Outstanding Player: Jason Schiavone

Big Train catcher Jason Schiavone (James Madison) is the 2023 LCS Most Outstanding Player, powering Bethesda to a two-game sweep of the Aces and a tenth league title. Schiavone went 4-for-7 in the series – all four extra base hits – with eight RBIs and five runs scored. His three-homer performance in game one gave the Big Train a huge series lead, and he picked up a double and two runs scored in the series clincher.
